Of course all statements about anything taking place next summer should be taken with a large pinch of salt, the Glastonbury Festival's lawyer is now on record that planning is going ahead and as far as they're concerned the 2021 festival will happen with a resale next April.

Plans do change but as Michael Eavis has previously said, there will be a clearer picture come March where I expect a final decision to go ahead will be made.

If the Queen can have two birthdays so can Glastonbury, Today marks 50 years to the day of the very first festival which had T-Rex (who replaced The Kinks who'd pulled out at the last minute) heading up a bill featuring other telents like Ian Anderson and Wayne Fontana.

Happy official birthday to the festival and hopefully we'll celebrate it properly next summer...

Hidden away in a brief news item at the start of this month is an interview with Michael Eavis where he says that realistically, there's a good chance he'll have to cancel the festival again for 2021 due to Covid.

https://news.sky.com/story/glastonbury-michael-eavis-says-he-cannot-guarantee-festival-will-go-ahead-next-year-12042235

250,000 people crammed into a fairly small space with no spcial distancing is prime breeding conditions for Covid, and you'd have tens of thousands of people potentially spreading the virus across the UK. Then there's travel restrictions between countries. If the same restrictions today are still in place next year, it's impossible for most international acts to come to perform.

Of course things might change and hopefully they do but prepare yourselves for another barren summer of festivals in 2021. We should find out in a month or two whether the normal sale of tickets is going ahead and if so then Eavis will be confident he can run a festival next year. If not then we'll have to wait and see...

Now 2020's muted celebrations are out the way, thoughts turn fully to Glastonbury 2021, which will be the 50th anniversary of the first Glastonbury Fayre. As we've seen during the BBC's 50th anniversary coverage Emily Eavis is promising a 'double blow out' for 2021 so what does this mean?

Firstly let's deal with the big Covid-19 shaped elephant in the room. It is not going to magically vanish in 12 months, nor will be have a vaccine unless there's a medical miracle, so we have to deal with the fact there might not be a festival next year. Assuming it happens, there will have to be measures to ensure some level of protection. Other festival organisers are talking of not granting people access unless people have a negative Covid test in the 7 days prior to a festival. Masks will definately play their part. That understanably could create its own chaos so keep an eye on this aspect in the months to come.

There's also the subject of tickets. Those who got a ticket for 2020 will see that carried over, however we'd not went through the resale process and had things went normally we'd probably not seen a lot of tickets for sale. So how many tickets may be sold for 2021? Well, there's going to be cancellations and a lot more than expected due to the Covid situation, people losing jobs or simply not being able to get the time off. I expect a larger cancellation rate than usual basically.

Then there's rumours the capacity will be expanded as discussed in this link here.

A potential extra 7k tickets is available to the festival, but rumours are swirling they could try to get a one-off expansion. Take this with a pinch of salt but considering how much money the festival, and the area, has lost it wouldn't surprise me if we did see that. Regardless though tickets will be hard to get so if you're fit and able, I'd perhaps look now into working at the festival to get ahead of the surge.

As for when they go on sale I'd presume October as usual until further notice.

Lineup will be a mix of acts confirmed for this year and those already booked for 2021. Don't expect anything along those lines til the autumn at least when hopefully things become clearer.

Basically stay tuned as I don't expect anything official until late summer, early autumn. Til then enjoy the loads of Glastonbury material still on iPlayer and hopefully we'll all come through this to be in a field in Somerset next June.

Today we should have all been arriving onsite for the 50th anniversary of the Glastonbury Festival, but we're instead having to deal with the varying phases of lockdown and the fact we can only celebrate the 50th anniversary online thanks to the BBC.

A lineup, and schedule is at the link below. It is very skewed towards sets from the last decade or so which is a shame as the main two stages have been being filmed since 1994 and local TV certainly filmed some sets, or parts of sets, going back to the very start in 1970.

However they are promising surprises, so from today you'll be able to start accessing the site and listening or watching everything they've done. A special treat will be Julien Temple's Glastonbury which has been apparently expanded to take in the 14 years since it was made.
